(By Magistrate Metiege Divine Njikang, Esq 9th batch class 82)
The origins of Government High School (GHS) Nyasoso can be traced back to 1964 when the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon (PCC) founded the Presbyterian Teachers Training College (PTTC) Nyasoso. This institution was established to address the acute demand for qualified primary school teachers who could serve in Presbyterian schools across the nation. Its mission was deeply rooted in the PCCs commitment to holistic education and evangelism, combining academic training with moral and spiritual formation.
Key Historical Highlights
This great idea started with experimental locations in Kumba with the school finally settling in Nyasoso which was termed “The Paradise in the Jungle” by the poineers.
This citadel of learning PTTC Nyasoso was inaugurated by the then PM of West Cameroon, ST Muna with Mr. J. E Time as Principal and Mr. F E Ngende as Vice Principal.
The school was years after ( 1974) transformed into GSS Nyasoso with Mr. F. E Ngende taking over as principal while Mr. J E Time was sent to GTTC Kumba as Principal.
PIONEERS
The pioneer principal of the school(PTTC) from it’s origin who braved the turbulent period of terrorism in Tombel in the 1960s and built this great citadel of learning was Dr. Stucki Stern, a brave swiss soldier cum missionary. Thanks to this strong willed man this great project was realized. After him there was Rev.Dr. Marcus Wyss, another Swiss Basel Missionary. After Rev. Wyss, was Mr. JE Time first Cameroonian who handed the baton to Mr. F.E Ngende, (first Principal of stage two of the institution (GSS Nyasoso) in September 1974.)
The administrative chain continued thereafter with successive Principals till the third transformation of the school in 1991 into GHS Nyasoso. Successive administrations have come and gone till date. That’s how far the school has evolved to this day.
- Establishment and Purpose (1964)
PTTC Nyasoso was founded to train primary school teachers who would deliver quality education anchored on Christian values. The institution aimed to foster both professional competence and moral integrity in its trainees.
- Initial Challenges and Community Support
Despite limited resources and infrastructure in its early years, the unwavering support of the PCC leadership, local community, and students ensured the colleges survival and growth. This partnership laid a foundation for its eventual success.
- Curriculum and Impact
The curriculum emphasized teacher training, religious education, and community service, producing graduates who became role models and leaders in their communities. PTTC alumni were instrumental in raising the educational standards in Presbyterian schools nationwide, with many assuming roles as head teachers and education administrators.
- Transition to Government Management (1974)
In 1974, PTTC Nyasoso was ceded to the Government of Cameroon as part of a policy to integrate teacher training into the national system. The institution was transformed into Government Secondary School (GSS) Nyasoso, shifting its focus from teacher training to providing general secondary education.
- Upgrade to GHS Nyasoso (1991)
Recognizing the need for expanded educational opportunities, GSS Nyasoso was upgraded to Government High School (GHS) Nyasoso in 1991. This transition allowed the institution to introduce advanced-level classes, thereby enabling students to pursue both Ordinary and Advanced Level studies.
Contributions of Key Personalities
The pioneer principal of GSS Nyasoso was Chief Esambe Ngende, who transitioned from his role as Vice Principal of PTTC Nyasoso to lead the new government school from 1974 to 1982. He was succeeded by Ekinde Bernard Sone Ivo, known as “BENIVO,” who served until 1986 and was followed by Epie Njumbe Godfred also an icons like the late Hon.Nzuobontane Andrew Ngabe who was among the pioneer students of PTTC Nyasoso and who later served as principal in the same institution and a host of other principals administering the school to date.
Facilities and Location
Located in the scenic town of Nyasoso, near Mount Kupe, the institution boasts a serene environment conducive to learning.
The PTTC era included remarkable the initiative and great financial inputs of the Basel Mission from Switzerland. The Basel Mission was of course the mother church that gave independence and autonomy to the PCC we have today and with the support of the Cameroon government in the realization of this enviable project. Facilities such as a botanical garden, zoo, gym court, handicraft center, and sports courts. These amenities, coupled with the area’s natural and cultural attractions, enriched the students educational experience.
Cultural Significance and Legacy
The institutions history is a testament to the pivotal role of the PCC and the Nyasoso community in advancing education in Cameroon. It underscores the evolution from a teacher-training college to a governmnet high school, reflecting the dynamic educational and socio-economic landscape of the Kupe Muanenguba Division.
Call for Historical Recognition
The importance of preserving and honoring the institution’s origin cannot be overstated. For instance, the school anthem, composed by Nakeli Bokwe Andrew (PTTC 1964 batch), remains a symbolic link to its rich heritage. Alumni and stakeholders, such as Honorable Nhon Mesape Same Samuel, continue to be invaluable resources for authentic historical information and guidance.
GHS Nyasoso stands today as a beacon of educational excellence, embodying its foundational values while adapting to the changing needs of the community and nation. It remains a cherished alma mater to generations of students and educators.

Their work is a true testament to the power of collective action and the enduring bond between an institution and its alumni.
In conclusion I, would love to say that the evolution of the school should therefore be from PTTC, GSS to GHS. This makes the history complete. If perhaps in future it evolves into a University this will simply come up to a fourth stage in the life of the same institution.
Some students attended GSS but not GHS. Others attended GHS and not GSS. In the same vein some attended PTTC and not GSS or GHS. But all ascribe to the same alumni. Some may have just that as their academic reference.
The inheritance shows the unbreakable link. The infrastructure, the teachers, the anthem all point to the same roots. The teachers were not laid off because the government was taking over the school. The same teachers continued with the new form of the school. That’s the unbroken link.
Culturally the anthem continued to link up with the origin. The same house changing its name and status. But it’s still the same house. If the Basel Mission didn’t come up with this institution and if they didn’t build it in Nyasoso, we most probably wouldn’t have been talking of GHS Nyasoso today
