SUMMARY OF ACTIVITIES AT THE SUMMA CUM LAUDE INFORMATION AND LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE (DECEMBER 2024 – AUGUST 2025)

This report outlines the key activities and initiatives undertaken at the Summa Cum Laude Information and Learning Resource Centre from December 2024 to August 2025. Highlights include workshops, community outreach, resource enhancements, and user engagement strategies aimed at promoting lifelong learning and information literacy.

 

 Capacity Building Workshop to trained  library focal points from Kupe/Muanenguba Division (Tombel, Bangem and Nguti) by Summa Cum Laude-Sango Madiba Centre in collaboration with the University of Buea Library and funding from Ephraim Abwe Diabe Platforms of Excellence (EAD-PFE).

A 3 days capacity building workshop on school library management and reading and writing clubs in secondary schools was held at the Summa Cum Laude (Sango Madiba) Information and Learning Resource Centre from the 3rd to the 5th of December 2024. The workshop which had twenty five teachers (focal points) from different secondary schools within Kupe Muanenguba Division emphasized the importance of information resource management, reading, and writing skills in academic success.

          The workshop aimed to equip educators with the skills and knowledge to manage school libraries and promote reading and writing clubs. Participants gained insights into effective library management, reading, and writing strategies to support academic success in that light books and computers were given to some schools to start up a library by the Ephraim Abwe Diabe platform of Excellence ( EAD-PFE).

Key Presentations from facilitators were;

 Professor Shafack Rosemary: Highlighted information resource management as a key to academic success, emphasizing effective library management strategies.

Dr. Olive Ejang: Focused on developing reading and writing skills, providing practical tips for educators.

DD Njikang: Emphasized enhancing reading and writing skills, discussing ways to promote literacy in secondary schools.

 

 

The workshop provided a valuable opportunity for educators to develop their skills and knowledge in school library management and reading and writing clubs. The presentations and discussions highlighted the importance of these skills in promoting academic success in secondary schools.

 

Enhancing Reading and Creative Writing Cultures in Secondary Schools in Kupe Muanenguba Division

The Divisional Delegation of Secondary Education for Kupe Muanenguba Division, in collaboration with the Summa Cum Laude Information and Learning Resource Centre and the Ephraim Abwe Diabe Platforms of Excellence, is implementing a project to enhance reading and creative writing cultures in secondary schools.

Enhance the quality of learning, reading, and writing in secondary schools

Organize intra- and inter-school competitions on creative writing and innovation

Facilitate young writers’ workshops and peer editing frameworks

Establish a framework for sharing best practices within schools

Promote reading and writing clubs as extracurricular activities

 The project uses a participatory approach, with competitions held at school and divisional levels. A one-day young writers’ workshop precedes the finals, facilitated by experienced pedagogues and writers.

 

Project Timeline

 January 3-7: Administrative procedures and sensitization

January 8-9: Further sensitization and preparations

January 10: First round of writing competition

January 14: Second round with best essays from each school

January 24: Selection of best essays within sub-divisions

January 26-29: Divisional level competition and young writers’ workshop

 The project explores themes drawn from the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and Agenda 2030, including quality education, poverty reduction, and environmental protection. Results will be published by the first week of February.

Consolidation of 2025-2026 Annual Strategic Plans

A workshop on consolidating the 2025-2026 annual strategic plans was facilitated by Mr. Ngalle Carlson. The goal was to build and create a new generation of leaders through skills-based education and e-learning, focusing on key areas such as project management, human rights, conflict prevention, and protection of civilians.

 Functional Skills in Project Management: Participants learned about essential project management concepts and techniques to enhance their skills.

Human Rights in Armed Conflicts: The workshop covered practical tools for monitoring, investigating, and reporting on human rights in armed conflicts, highlighting the importance of protecting civilians.

Conflict Prevention, Management, and Resolution: Alternative approaches to conflict resolution were explored, providing participants with practical perspectives on managing and resolving conflicts.

 Protection of Civilians in Armed Conflicts: The workshop addressed child protection and gender dimensions of protection of civilians (POC), emphasizing the need for a comprehensive approach to safeguarding vulnerable populations.

A consolidated strategic plan for 2025-2026 was developed, outlining key goals and objectives for building a new generation of leaders.

Participants gained valuable insights and skills in project management, human rights, conflict prevention, and protection of civilians.

The workshop provided a platform for participants to develop their skills and knowledge in critical areas, contributing to the creation of a new generation of leaders equipped to address complex challenges.

Report on the International Women’s Day 2025 Workshop

In celebration of International Women’s Day 2025, the Summa Cum Laude (Sango-Madiba) Information and Learning Resource Centre, in collaboration with PC Muebah and financially supported by the Ephraim Abwe Diabe Platforms of Excellence (EAD-PFE), organized a transformative workshop aimed at accelerating action on women’s economic emancipation. Held in Nninong, the workshop brought together women and girl leaders to focus on women at the center of peacebuilding,  marketable skills development, and micro-savings management.

 

The workshop highlighted the pivotal role of women in how women in conflict resolution and community healing. By sharing inspiring stories of women leaders who have made significant contributions to peace processes, the presentation aimed to empower participants and underscore the importance of their voices in advocacy and decision-making. Participants were encouraged to reflect on their own experiences and consider how they could contribute to peace building efforts in their communities.

The final segment of the workshop focused on micro-savings management, a crucial aspect of financial literacy by Rev. Ndoh Neville.  Insights into various savings strategies and tools, such as savings groups and community banks were discussed. Through group discussions, participants shared their experiences with saving and managing finances, highlighting the challenges they often face. Wooden piggy banks were shared to participants to enable them make informed financial decisions about saving thereby enhancing their economic independence. Practical exercises allowed participants to create personal savings plans, setting achievable goals for their financial growth.

 

The workshop shifted to a practical approach with hands-on learning sessions focused on developing marketable skills. This was programed in two phases;

Phase one was baking and pastries facilitated by a trainer and expert in the field (Md. N. Lizette)

Phase two, was on the 28th of March with accompanied activities on leadership and women rights to vote followed by liquid soap making (by Mr. Chuye jaspa)

The hands-on learning experience was designed to empower women and girls by equipping them with skills that enhance their employability and entrepreneurial potential that allows them to pursue income-generating opportunities.

The State of the Art modern and well equipped Center has the capacity of hosting seminars, training , computer learning and a good library

The Basic Education Community in Nninong Clan-Bangem Commemorates  International Day of the African Child 2025 at The Summa cum laude sango-Madiba Information and Learning Resource Centre Ekol Muebah-Nninong June 16th 2025.

To commemorate the Day of the African Child, the Suma Cum Laude Information and Learning Resource Center organized a series of educational activities aimed at enhancing public speaking, basic mathematics, general knowledge, and appreciation of arts and culture. This initiative, which spanned from May 9th to June 12th, featured intra-school competitions culminating in an inter-school event on June 16th, the official Day of the African Child.

The primary objectives of the initiative were:

  1. Promote Public Speaking: To enhance confidence and communication skills among students.
  2. Encourage Academic Excellence: To foster a love for mathematics and general knowledge.
  3. Cultural Awareness: To celebrate and promote African arts and culture.
  4. Scholarship Opportunities: To provide aspiring students with scholarships to further their education.

Planning and Execution

The project commenced with intra-school competitions where students participated in various activities designed to assess their skills in public speaking, mathematics, and general knowledge. These competitions were supervised by volunteers from the Suma Cum Laude Center, ensuring a structured and supportive environment. Participants were encouraged to exhibit creativity and critical thinking, and the competitions were held at various schools within the community.

            The culmination of the initiative was marked by an inter-school competition held on June 16th. This event brought together the best performers from the intra-school competitions, allowing them to showcase their talents on a larger stage. The inter-school competition featured various categories, including:

Public Speaking: Students delivered speeches on topics relevant to the African child, emphasizing empowerment and education.

Mathematics Challenge: A series of timed quizzes aimed at testing students’ mathematical skills.

General Knowledge Quiz: Participants answered questions covering a wide range of topics, including history, geography, and current affairs.

Arts and Culture Showcase: Students presented artistic works that celebrated African heritage.

The competition concluded with an awards ceremony where outstanding participants were recognized for their achievements. Prizes were awarded in various categories, motivating students to strive for excellence. Additionally, scholarships for aspiring form one students were announced, providing opportunities for further education and encouraging academic ambition.

The celebration of the Day of the African Child through this initiative not only highlighted the importance of education but also underscored the need for continuous support and development of young minds. The Suma Cum Laude Information and Learning Resource Center is committed to building on this success in future events, further promoting educational opportunities and cultural awareness for African children

Enhancing Digital Literacy in Nursery and Primary Schools in Nninong: One-Week Foundational Computer Training Course for teachers and Head teachers June 2025

In a significant initiative to enhance digital literacy among educators, head teachers of nursery and primary schools, along with school focal points in Nninong Bangem Sub Division, participated in a week-long training program at the Summa Cum Laude (Sango-Madiba) Information and Learning Resource Centre in Ekol Muebah-NninongMuebah-Nninong (17th -19th June 2025). This training, inaugurated by the divisional delegate of basic education for Kupe Muanenguba, aimed to equip educators with essential skills in computer use, coding, robotics, and the application of arithmetic in real-life problem solving.

The primary goal of the training was to introduce digital literacy to students and create computer hubs in schools. This initiative also focused on enhancing the capabilities of adult focal points to effectively utilize computer technology. Key areas of instruction included:

Keyboard Proficiency: Fundamental typing skills necessary for efficient computer use.

Operating Systems and Software: Understanding how to navigate operating systems and utilize common software applications such as word processors, spreadsheets, and presentation tools.

Internet Navigation and File Management: Skills to safely and effectively use the internet and manage digital files.

Introduction to computer coding and robotics.

The training aimed to empower head teachers to impart quality knowledge to their students, vital in a competitive and interconnected world.

As highlighted in the training materials, computer literacy is increasingly seen as a gateway to participating in the global economy. Despite this, billions, particularly in Africa, remain disconnected from these opportunities. The continent is noted for having the least level of computerization globally, which poses significant barriers to educational and economic growth.

          Dr. Abwe Diabe emphasized the importance of this training, stating that it represents the beginning of a broader effort to extend digital literacy initiatives to other remote areas across Cameroon. This program aims to bridge the existing digital divide, particularly in regions like Kupe Muanenguba. Computers were handed to all primary and nursery schools represented.

         It is in response to this growing need,  that the Summa Cum Laude (Sango-Madiba) Centre’s Summer holidays Digital Literacy Programmed is empowering youths, children , pupils and teachers to achieve computer literacy skills  by offering basic computing courses an initiative that started in (May 2025 and extended to summer holidays). As a means to bridge the technology gap that exists in this modern day digital society.

Celebrating the International Day of the African Child at the Center.

The training on fundamentals of facilitating coding, robotics and talent development for community empowerment in Bliss Global in collaboration with Summa Cum Laude Information and Learning Resource Center  July 14 – July 28, 2023  

In an effort to enhance quality supervision and facilitate the integration of coding and robotics into educational frameworks, the Summa Cum Laude Information and Learning Resource Center organized a training program for volunteers. This initiative aimed to equip participants with foundational knowledge in electricity and basic coding, fostering talent development in the community.

         The training was made possible through the collaboration with Bliss Global and Campeche, whose expertise and resources significantly enriched the program. Their involvement ensured a comprehensive curriculum and provided participants with access to various learning materials.

 Scholarship Initiatives for GSS Muebah-Nninong

The Ephraim Abwe Diabe platform of Excellence, Summa Cum Laude Information and Learning Resource Center, together in partnership with the sons and daughters of Nninong, launched a scholarship initiative aimed at increasing enrollment at GSS Muebah-Nninong. This initiative was designed to promote hard work and excellence among aspiring form one students. To ensure a competitive selection process, the following activities were implemented:

July 24, 2025: Initiation of activities with interviews conducted at the Summa Cum Laude Center.

August 5, 2025: Written assessments were held to further evaluate the candidates.

August 9, 2025: Scholarship awards ceremony, where successful candidates will be recognized and rewarded.

This collaborative effort not only seeks to boost enrollment at GSS Muebah-Nninong but also fosters a culture of excellence among students, and also encouraging free and maximum use of the educational resources present in the center. Also this was a means to reach and provide the basic needs of that particular child with dreams but limited means.

 

These activities from December 2024 to August 2025 at the Summa Cum Laude Information and Learning Resource Centre have significantly contributed to enhancing community engagement, promoting literacy, and supporting educational initiatives. Continued efforts in these areas will strengthen the Centre’s role as a vital resource for learning and information.
