ICLEI Drills Local actors in Cameroon on financing for climate change adaptation and sustainable development

ICLEI Africa has drilled local council actors in Cameroon on how to source for climate change adaptation and sustainable development financing.

 The two day training workshop on gender-responsive climate change adaptation project prioritization, development and financing organized by ICLEI Africa and supported by Brokering Innovation for Decenetralised clicame finance and Gender equality, BRIDGE, held from 27 to 28 August 2024 at the Feicom multipurpose room.

 The training event according to ICLEI Africa coordinator,  Blondel Silenou,  ispart of the Bridge project, aimed at strengthening the capacities of knowledge brokers in Cameroon for inclusive planning, project development, and financing of local and gender-responsive adaptation actions.

“The ICLEI workshop aims to identify key climate change actors in Cameroon and improve discussions on financing for climate change adaptation and sustainable development. It also seek to identify and refine the most appropriate mechanisms to unlock financing for locally-led and gender-responsive adaptation actions,” Blondel says.

BRIDGE by supporting the training says it intends to improve access by subnational stakeholders (municipalities and partners) to appropriate finance for locally-led and gender-responsive climate change adaptation action in Cameroon, with learnings scaled to the central Africa region and beyond.

This is done by strengthening the capacity of knowledge brokers working in Cameroon to enable inclusive planning, project development and financing for locally-led and gender-responsive adaptation action.

It also identifies and enhance the best-suited mechanisms to unlock finance for locally-led and gender-responsive adaptation in Cameroon as well as enhancing the capacity of knowledge brokers operating in central Africa to improve access and deployment of finance for locally-led and gender-responsive adaptation projects.

Participants in the training workshop include FEICOM staff, local council authorities, stakeholders in climate change etc.

The participants acknowledged the importance of training workshop that will go a long way in not only building their capacity by facilitate access to financing to fight climate change.

“ We experience the effects of climate change in our communities on daily basis. My coastal town in Kribi is very vulnerable by virtue of its geographical location. The knowledge acquired here will help my local council better plan on climate financing,” says Chief Ntonga Mnadou Etienne,first assistant mayor of Kribi 1 council.
