Eco OUTLOOK Newspaper caught up with the coordinator of the 1992/ 93 batch Mr Ransom Akule for an interview after the event.

  1. Can you introduce yourself?

I am called Akule Akale Ransom Sone. I am the Coordinator of the 1992 batch of GHS Bangem  the Batch of Excellence.

  1. 2. Can we know what items have been donated by your batch to the school?

Today we are donating gifts to the GBHS Bangem worth 1.5million CFA Francs, thanks to our class contributions and support from some philanthropic persons through our appeal letters to them.

These include;

  • 4 Complete sets of gas cookers including gas bottles and gas filled
  • 5 sets of complete computer desktops
  • A set of jerseys
  • 2 footballs
  • 2 handballs
  • An automatic voltage regulator

  1. What is the objective behind this donation?

Our main objective for this gesture is centred around giving back to our mother institution that nurtured us to be what we are today. Some 23 years ago we came to GHS very young, innocent and empty. Today, we are grown ups and doing well, partly because of the training we received in this institution. We want to focus on assisting in improving the learning/teaching environment in GBHS Bangem.

  1. What are your expectations from the students and staff after this donation?

With this gesture though little, we are confident it will meet its objectives especially enhancing the teaching/learning process. The gifts were carefully selected so as to meet the immediate academic demands we have today. The computers to enhance science and technology, the cookers to improve on the food and nutrition lab thereby giving the students the necessary skills to easily integrate into the labour market after school.  The sports equipment is intended to encourage some leisure after learning, in line with the saying that “all that learning without play makes Jack a dull boy”.

  1. Has your batch assisted the school in the past? What was the nature of the assistance.

We are a relatively new association of ex students. It is the first time we are visiting the school and we hope our visits shall be regular henceforth.

  1. Can we know more about the class of excellence?

Our batch code-named “the class of excellence” was echoed as far back as form 1 by our then principal Mr. Enone Fritz Mesumbe of blessed memory. We were all a list “A” batch in the common entrance exams.

The initiative to come together came some 5 years ago. Some few members from the diaspora and Cameroon came together online through a WhatsApp forum and the objective then was building the forum to a level where a considerable number of ex class mates shall come together.

The motivation and zeal for this group became stronger when we lost our class mate Mr Enongene E. Elobile through a ghastly motor accident along the Mbanga-Douala highway.

Today we have 45 active members. We wish in the near future many more will join so we make a formidable bond as we had 23 yrs ago.

So far, the short time that the class forum has existed, we have been able to make some significant achievements, specially building the lovely bond amongst ourselves.  Some of our achievements which include;

  • providing a sustainable scheme for our late mate’s children.
  • adopting a constitution that binds us together and which we intend legalised in the days ahead.
  • electing an executive organ headed by a general coordinator who has a 2-year mandate renewable once. I’m succeeding my predecessor Mr Etape William in Germany who was the pioneer general coordinator.
  • organizing today’s general assembly which includes the handing of gifts to the school. This was preceded by the first ever general assembly we had in Limbe in 2023.
  • supporting several of our mates during the loss of their love ones like their parent, celebrating child births, marriages, and awards of members.
  • composing of a class anthem just to name these few.

It’s rare to find a class of ex students come together like ours, and in a short while doing great things impacting self and society at large.

  1. Any plans for the future?

Yes. In future we look at having a sustainable business venture that shall not only impact members but create jobs to improve the livelihood of some Cameroonians. Such an initiative could help in reducing the burden of always pressing members for funding of the group’s activities. In the future we look forward to still offering items to the school with scholarships schemes that can help the poor and underprivileged.

We look forward to also help out some of our struggling class mates who may be in need of any form of support.

Thanks for taking to ECO OUTLOOK.

You are welcome.
