October Presidential Elections; Cameroon Bishops call on Cameroonians to Make or Mar their future.

The Pastoral Letter of the National Episcopal Conference of Cameroon has been released with a strong message to the Cameroon people to make or mar  their future by choosing who can effectively lead them.

Speaking by phone from Bamenda, Archbishop Andrew Nkea, President of the Episcopal Conference of Cameroon, emphasised:

“The president we choose should be able to tour the ten regions of the country and see things for himself rather than relying solely on reports. We believe we should help our people make the right choice. As a conference, our role is to outline the qualities that a good presidential candidate should possess, and that is where it ends—we do not choose candidates. As religious leaders, we stand on the side of truth.”

Titled “Pastoral Letter of the Bishops of Cameroon on the Presidential and Regional Elections in Cameroon,” the document is signed by 23 Bishops, demonstrating the overwhelming unanimity within the National Episcopal Conference.

In its preamble, the letter states: “The year 2025, as we very well know, is a crucial and decisive year in the socio-political life of Cameroon due to the presidential and regional elections. It continues: “Elections represent significant moments that engage the attention of all citizens. At the same time, they provide an opportunity for people to assert their sovereignty through the free and deliberate choice of their leaders. The presidential election, in particular, carries immense stakes and must be approached in an informed and conscientious manner when voting.”

The pastoral letter is structured under various subheadings, including:

– The Role of the Church in Politics

– The Responsibility of Christians and Other Religious Believers

– The Duty to Participate in Elections

– Who Is Required to Vote?

– Why Run for Office, and Why Get Elected?

– How and Who to Vote For?

– The Legal Framework of Elections

– Media, Social Media Networks, and the Mission of the Episcopal Conference Commission for Justice

This pastoral letter serves as a guide for Roman Catholic Christians and other believers in Cameroon, offering them principles to consider as they prepare for the upcoming elections.

Cameroon’s presidential election is scheduled for October 2025, with President Paul Biya seeking another term in office. He will face a divided and weak opposition, making his path to re-election appear relatively unchallenged.
