

One of the pioneer JMC lecturers Dr Mrs Ndoh Bertha, presided over the ceremony and launch of ASJUB Magazine

Dr. Mrs. Ndoh Bertha Bakata , Board Chair of the National Oil Refinery, SONARA and one of the first lecturers in the department of Journalism and Mass Communication, University of Buea, has appreciated the rich legacy that the department has upheld for over thirty years. She was speaking in her capacity as matron of the 30th anniversary celebration of the Association of Student Journalists, ASJUB in the department of Journalism and Mass Communication in the University of Buea.
The event was the celebration of 30 years of existence of the association. The JMC department since creation in 1993 has been impacting knowledge into young minds and talents while counting the strength and resilience in producing journalists who are now serving in international and national organizations as well as media organs in the country.
The two-day event was celebrated on the theme: Journalism and mass communication in the era of digitalization.
Speaking during the occasion, Dr. Mrs. Ndoh Bertha known as the mother of JMC promised her unwavering commitment to support the department and the association. The former special adviser at the prime minister’s office commended the strides made by ASJUB in preserving the rich heritage of the department.


Dr. Nengieh Lizzie , some lecturers and the students were all present at the ceremony.
“I want to appreciate the rich legacy that of this association in the department of Journalism and all this is thanks to the selfless efforts of all the stakeholders who have held this flagship department at heart especially the late Prof. Enoh Tanjong, Prof. George Ngwa, Mr Asonglefack Nkemleke, the late Pa Kome Epule who were pioneer and all the Heads of Departments who have served diligently”. Dr. Mrs. Ndoh noted.
“When you visit international organizations you will find JMC students doing well. This is evident of the solid foundation they received while at the department….. I am willing to support ASJUB and the department as long as I can”.
According to the Head of Department Dr. Nengieh Lizzie Wantchami the 30 years celebration marks a remarkable milestone in the life of the association which has bridged the gap between the departmental and the student body.
“The celebration of 30th anniversary of the association of student Journalists is thanks to our unwavering commitment to produce Journalist with an entrepreneurial vision”.
Activities to mark the special occasion included amongst others sports walk, a football match, launch of anniversary magazine and fund raising to furbish the Chariot Radio.
Other guests present at the ceremony were lecturers of the Department, the general manager of My Media Prime, Kum Leonard, the publisher of the Municipal Update and the Chronicle Times newspaper Cham Victor Bama, prolific Equinox Television editor Jonathan Babila, alumni of the Department and well wishers
The anniversary also witnessed a fundraiser for the chariot radio that has been training the student journalist and the launch of the 30th anniversary magazine. Awards were equally given in recognition of the contributions of individual towards the progress and growth of the association.
Some students also received awards of excellence in the department.
Students were reminded of the need to take their Journalism practice seriously and respect professional ethics.
