President Paul BIYA Convenes Higher Judicial Council Session

President Paul Biya has convened the Higher Judicial Council (Conseil Supérieur de la Magistrature) to hold on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at the Unity Palace in Yaoundé.

The President of the Republic is expected to preside over a solemn session of the nine-man council.

This meeting accordingly is significant as it will be the first time the council has met in nearly six years, with the last session held on August 10, 2020.

The council to be chaired by the President will have to oversee the recruitment, promotion, transfer, and discipline of magistrates in Cameroon.

This meeting experts say, comes amid mounting pressure and criticism regarding the delay in organizing these sessions, which are crucial for managing the judicial career path of magistrates.

The session is expected to address vacancies, career advancements (promotions), and disciplinary cases for magistrates.

The long absence of this council has led to bottlenecks in the management of judicial officials, making this upcoming session a heavily scrutinised event for the future of the Cameroonian judiciary.
