Climate variability and change are critical issues on today’s agenda for all countries including Cameroon threatening the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
Experts say Africa is expected to be more vulnerable to climate variability and change due to over reliance on natural resources-particularly for rain-fed agriculture- and its low economic and institutional capacity to cater for climate adaptation strategies.
Cameroon in particular is experiencing shifts in rainfall and temperature patterns that is having significant impacts in the country’s agriculture sector, which is a major contributor to the economy.
Dr Azemtsop Ivodia Tiazie brilliantly defended her PHD thesis in this area under the topic “ The effects of Climate Variability on Irish Potatoes and Cassava Production in the South Eastern Section of Mount Bamboutos”
Her PHD defense took Place May 5th 2026 at the Faculty of social and Management Sciences University of Yaounde 1.
The defense was coordinated by a five man jury including Professor Joseph Amougou as President. Other member included Prof. Clement Anguh, Prof. Yemafouo Aristide etc.
The researcher was able to demonstrate how climate variability manifest and also proposed what could be done to curb its effects on the two crops in particular and other food crops in general.
In one of the solutions she said a scientific guide should be provided to farmers detailing out climate calendar that will guide farmers when to plant their crops.
The different solutions she proposed to Irish Potatoes, a short cycle crop and cassava, along cycle crop she says will go a long way to douse the effects of climate variability on these crops.
One of the Jury members Prof Anguh saluted the brilliant demonstration and thesis presentation by the candidate in this very sensitive subject on Climate.
“ Her presentation was excellent clearly showing the impact of climate variability of the production of these crops” Prof Anguh said.
