As the rains intensify, accessing the divisional headquarters of Kupe-Muanenguba, BANGEM in the South West region has become disturbingly perilous. Navigating the main road linking Tombel –Bangem and Melong-Bangem is a nightmare region, as the routes deteriorate due to heavy rains and lack of maintenance.

The worsening condition of the road has prompted the Senior Divisional Officer of Kupe-Muanenguba, Théophile Nguia Beina, to mobilise local resources and residents to rehabilitate the road and provide temporary relief for commuters.

Community efforts have been on the ground since July 14 with volcanic ash used as a stabilising agent for roads is being applied in some seriously damaged portions by residents.

The intervention is urgent, as the impassable state of the road has already made trade between Bangem and Melong-Tombel difficult.

The area has long suffered from poor road infrastructure, like many other parts of the South West.

The vital Bangem–Nguti road, which promises to enclave several villages, is still under construction, while the Bangem–Tombel road remains seasonal and almost impassable for vehicles during the rainy season.

The SDO said the revival of the Bangem–Melong- Tombel road is critical to restoring the movement of persons, facilitating the evacuation of agricultural produce to markets, and sustaining trade between Kupe-Muanenguba and the Littoral
