SDF! POWER to the people
The Constitutional Council has dismissed the Social Democratic Front (SDF)’s petition challenging the use of a symbol on Serge Espoir Matomba’s ballot paper. The court ruled in favour of Matomba, leader of the PURS party, in his dispute with SDF candidate Joshua Osih.
The SDF had argued that the “power to the people” raised-fist symbol used by PURS was its registered trademark and demanded its removal from Matomba’s ballot.
The Constitutional Council began examining petitions filed by presidential candidates contesting the use of colours, logos, and other party symbols in the run-up to the election today, Thursday, August 21, 2025.
The SDF had petitioned the Constitutional Council asking that Serge Espoir Matomba and his UPSR or PURS political party to remove the “power to the people” fist demonstration, arguing that it is a registered trademark of the SDF party.
