The National Commission for the Promotion of Bilingualism and Multiculturalism has reinforced its collaboration with some partner Civil Society Organisations to advance the fight against hate speech and xenophobia, in line with the Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2026.
The ceremony marked the renewal of the coalition platform between the NCPBM and some Civil Society Organizations for the fight against Hate speech and Xenophobia in Cameroon.
The partnership signing ceremony took place at Palaise de Congress in Yaounde, August 12, 2026.
The Secretary General of the National Commission for the Promotion of Bilingualism and Multiculturalism, NCPBM, Dr Chi Asafor Cornelius, underscored Cameroon’s rich multicultural heritage as an asset for peace and development, calling on the different partners to initiate dialogue with their communities to better sensitize the population.
The NCPBM emphasised that civil society plays a vital role in curbing hate speech, especially during an electoral year. Their role includes sensitisation, awareness-raising, tracking, and reporting cases of xenophobic or inflammatory rhetoric to the commission.
Where necessary, the commission escalates such reports to the President of the Republic for appropriate action.
“Civil Society Organisations can help in sensitising, they can help in tracking, and they can help in raising awareness. They can help inform the commission of all that is being done wrongly in terms of hate speech and xenophobia so that the commission can take the necessary measures to help curb it. When the measure is not at the level of the commission, the commission can now forward it to the President of the Republic for appropriate measures to be taken by the competent public entities,” Dr Chi Asafor said.
The National Commission for the Promotion of Bilingualism and Multiculturalism (NCPBM) and its partners say they are determined to reduce hate speech to its “barest minimum” to preserve peace, unity, and social cohesion across Cameroon.
Some of the civil societies who signed the partnership include, CAMASEJ Bamenda, Hwalana for Peace and Development based in the Southwest, DefyHatenow Cameroon, Association Civic Watch Cameroon etc
