Celebrating Africa Day today.

My grandmother always told us, “If you do not know where you come from and what you were taught, then you are nowhere.” These words echo powerfully today as we celebrate Africa Day on this 25th of May, 2024. Many people are unaware of this significant day, yet it is a day when we, as Africans, should make ourselves known to the world. Not through complaints, but by showcasing what we have accomplished as a people to inspire and drive solutions. Today is a day to foster love, not hate, a day that calls on us to remember and celebrate our roots, our culture, and our achievements.

Drawing from the wisdom of my grandmother who believed in the power of offering value, today’s Africa Day theme, “Educate and Skill Africa for the 21st Century,” reminds us of the importance of retooling our skills. She said, “There is no power greater than a man or woman who can offer value—value is earned, not given.” These words are more relevant today than ever. As we mark Africa Day, let’s channel these teachings.
