The report notes that more than 734,000 people are in a situation of acute food insecurity in the Far North.

It also highlights that at least ten people were injured and three people killed during an inter-community clash in Mayo-Danay.

The situation in the Far North of Cameroon is also marked by the displacement of people. Thus, according to the same source, more than 9,000 people were displaced in Logone-et-Chari and Mayo-Tsanaga in December due to insecurity.

Faced with this situation, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has recorded nearly 223,000 people who received food assistance.

According to the report, after a period of heavy flooding that affected more than 459,000 people and destroyed tens of thousands of homes, hectares of crops and livestock, December was marked by the gradual drying off of water from the Logone (in Cameroon) and Chari (in Chad) rivers. The most affected and initially inaccessible districts in the departments of Mayo Danay and Logone et Chari are beginning to be accessible by land.

“ We are seeing the beginning of a return of populations to their areas of origin, even if the majority are still in their host sites. Their destroyed means of subsistence (livestock and crops) are becoming more and more accessible. This is the case of Kaï kai, Vélé in Mayo-Danay, Blangoua, Makary, Gouley, Hile Alifa in Logone and Chari,” the report said.

According to assessments conducted in most of the affected sites in Kousseri and Logone Birni, the priority needs concern food, shelter and essential household items, water, hygiene and sanitation, as well as health care.

Local authorities, accompanied by partners, are continuing with emergency response. However, the issue of reconstruction arises and goes beyond the emergency response, which remains limited.

“The security situation has been aggravated by the activity of non-state armed groups like Boko-Haram through acts of kidnappings, illicit taxation and assassinations of civilians, particularly in the Lake Chad area. The departments most affected by insecurity remain Mayo-Sava, Mayo-Tsanaga and Logone et Chari,” the report noted.

Around 182 security incidents were recorded, with a total of 27 people killed, including one child, 19 injured and 56 kidnapped, including nine children.

In total, in 2024, a total of 1,584 incidents were reported, including 15 children, with 262 civilians killed, 268 injured and 282 people kidnapped in the Far North region, the report said.
