The Politics of Project Timing: A Cameroon Conundrum

 By Dr Ayuk Takem

As Major Elections Loom, Coincidence or Strategy Behind Sudden Project Completions? In recent months, Cameroonians have witnessed a flurry of project completions and announcements, particularly in the South West and North West regions. The tarring of the Bakebe-Barchuo-Akagbe stretch of the Kumba-Mamfe road and the completion of the long-awaited Ndu-Nkambe road are just two examples. While these developments are undoubtedly welcome, they raise important questions about the relationship between project timing and elections in Cameroon.

It is no secret that important projects often coincide with major elections. This phenomenon can be attributed to various factors. Politicians may utilize these projects as a means to garner voter support and showcase their accomplishments. By initiating or completing projects around election time, politicians can demonstrate their effectiveness and commitment to the community, which can be a powerful vote-winner.

Elections also create a sense of urgency and accountability. With an election looming, politicians may feel pressure to deliver on their promises and complete ongoing projects. This can lead to a surge in project completions and announcements around election time. Furthermore, the electoral cycle can influence the timing of project funding and approvals, as governments may allocate funds for projects in the lead-up to an election to stimulate economic growth and create jobs.

However, it is essential to note that not all projects are driven by electoral considerations. Many projects result from long-term planning and development, w]ith timing determined by factors such as funding availability, technical feasibility, and community need.

Conclusion

As Cameroon prepares for upcoming elections, it remains to be seen whether the current spate of project completions is mere coincidence or strategic political maneuvering. One thing is certain, however: the people of Cameroon deserve transparency and accountability from their leaders, regardless of the electoral cycle.
