Dozens of workers’ syndicates took part in the march past at the May 20 Boulevard marking the 140th International Labour Day.
Labour Day in Cameroon is celebrated annually on May 1st as a public holiday, honoring workers’ contributions towards the development of the country.
The celebrations are usually characterised by sports walk, parades, marches, and speeches and feasting by the different institutions.
Celebrations in Yaounde featured thousands of workers from various unions and companies marching in a parade.
 According to the Minister of Labour Gregoire Owona who presided over the ceremony, the day emphasizes workers’ rights, improved labor conditions, and strengthening social dialogue.
 Nationwide events focused on the theme: “Social Dialogue and Decent Work: Factors of Peace, National Cohesion and Economic Development of the Company”.
The 2026 theme emphasizes social dialogue and decent work as drivers of peace, national cohesion, and development.
Pre-event activities began on April 26-27, 2026, with sports walks involving workers from both public and private sectors to mark the launch of the festivities.
Also the 5th edition of the “WorkUp Cameroun” labour fair opened on April 27, 2026, at the Centre Regional Council esplanade, highlighting a new era for professional excellence and youth employment.
 Some organizations, such as the Cameroon National Shippers’ Council (CNSC), held training workshops focused on “Teamwork for Performance” in preparation for the day.
 The celebrations took place amid discussions on enhancing social dialogue, improving working conditions, and promoting the rights of workers.
