Death of Student who could not afford medical treatment payment in Yaoundé Sparks Healthcare Outrage

A student identified as Melissa Essomba has reportedly died in Yaoundé after allegedly being unable to afford emergency medical treatment.

According to reports circulating online, the BAC candidate fell seriously ill while writing an examination and was rushed to Nkoldongo District Hospital.

Sources claim hospital staff requested an upfront payment of 8,000 FCFA before treatment could begin. The student reportedly had only 2,000 FCFA at the time. Reports suggest that treatment was delayed, and the student later died at the hospital.

The incident has triggered outrage on social media, with many Cameroonians criticizing the country’s healthcare system and the financial barriers faced by low-income families seeking urgent care.

Authorities have not yet officially commented on the case.
