A workshop to improve on the skills of some selected young writers in KupeMuanemguba is on course.
The Young Writers’ Workshop, organized by the KM Divisional Delegation for Secondary, in collaboration with the Faculty of Arts University of Buea, and the Ephraim Abwe Diabe Platforms of Excellence (EAD-PFE) runs from February 3-4, 2025
The workshop is hosted by the Summa Cum Laude (Sango Madiba) Information and Learning Resource Centre in Ekol-Muebah Nninong . This multi-purpose center it should be recalled was in December 2024 officially inaugurated by the SDO for KupeMuanenguba.
The workshop draws outstanding students from Nguti, Tombel and Bangem Sub Divisions to the calm and serene Muanenguba hills of Muebah-Nninong, for two a days of intensive learning, according to the organinisers.
According to the KupeMuanenguba divisional delegate for secondary education Nikang Peter Mejame,
“ The workshop is essentially the divisional finals of what began as in inter-school essay writing competition. It is intended to beef up the skills of the laureates from the various sub-divisions, to prepare them for any challenges in the writing world,” he said.
Dr Abwe Diabe Ephraim, community volunteer in chief and promoter of the centre hosting the workshop, in a virtual message called on the finalists to continue working hard and especially uphold the core values of honesty, intergrity, hardwork and love for humanity that the centre drives.
BE AN ACCOMPLISHED WRITER
He enjoined them to strive to be accomplished writers by reading hard, widely and profusely, writing all literary genres , prose, poetry, drama, learn from other writers and exchange ideas and skills, teach others etc.
Professor Apuge Micheal Etuge , dean of the Faculty of arts University of Buea recalled that the workshop is the off shoot of what began in December when they brought in 25 teachers from different schools to develop the writing skills of these learners and setting up libraries.
‘ What we are having today is the outcome of that initiative. We have to see if the knowledge they acquired is having the impact we longed for” Professor Apuge said.
In a virtual message, he called on the young students not to rest on their laurels but continue to work hard and do even better.
” Take advantage of the opportunity offered you through this training and excell. Develop and harness excellent skills needed of young writers that you have become,” he advised .
FINALIST ALL FEMALE
Professor Apuge noted that the six finanlists were all females, indicative that women were more assertive in writing skills and should be encouraged. However, he enjoined male students not to lag behind but work hard to stand out in the next competition.
” The finalists are all female students, we want to encourage them while at the same time calling on the boys to sit up,” he said.
He encouraged the young writers to keep their writing flames burning so they could join the ranks of renowned female writers in Cameroon and beyond and could in the future be chronicled among great women in the country like Professor Dorothy Njeuma, former UB Vice chancellor or Professor Nalova Lyonga, current Minister of secondary education.
Participants at the workshop say their expectations were high and they were ready to stand to the challenge.
“ It a big privilege given to me to compete. My expectations are high and I hope to win. I am ready for the competition and think I can stand to the challenge,” says Enongene Getrude NTUBE, of GTTC Bangem, one of the workshop participants.
