Kamto throws weight behind Tchiroma, Bello Bouba single Opposition Candidate  move to Oust Paul Biya.

The trio capabale of turning the tides come October 12.

Three months before the presidential election, Cameroon opposition is working to have a single candidate to face the ruling party. According to Jeune Afrique, Maurice Kamto, though not running following rejection by the constitutional council has given his total support to the single opposition candidate drive by Bello Bouba Maïgari, and Issa Tchiroma Bakary , a move capable of turning the tides in the October polls.

It notes that the ongoing dialogue between Maurice Kamto, Bello Bouba Maïgari, and Issa Tchiroma Bakary would build confidence among Cameroonian voters who are yearning for change.

According to Jeune Afrique, these negotiations have been going on for over a year, notably between Kamto’s Cameroon Renaissance Movement (MRC) and the National Union for the Democracy and Progress. However  discussions have intensified since the Constitutional Council’s decision to reject Kamto’s candidature.

Though the constitutional court on Tuesday rejected the candidacy of Kamto, the high-profile critic of the president Paul Biya says he is still bent on ensuring the ousting of the incumbent regime come October 12.

“The decision to rule me out of the 2025 presidential election was taken a long time ago” by Biya’s RDPC party, Kamto said in a video posted on Facebook, challenging the “arbitrary” court decision.

Tuesday’s ruling confirmed a decision in July by the electoral commission, which had said that Kamto could not run since another MANIDEM candidate was already registered.

“The regime in power hurried to set up a new president of MANIDEM as a candidate to artificially create multiple nominations,” Kamto said.

In the run-up to Kamto’s exclusion, Human Rights Watch had warned that not allowing him to stand would raise concerns about the credibility of the electoral process.

“Excluding the most popular opponent from the electoral process will leave a shadow over whatever results are eventually announced,” warned Ilaria Allegrozzi, senior Africa researcher at HRW.

Cameroon’s opposition says with a united front for a single candidate the CPDM will be ousted.

On Saturday, representatives from several parties published a statement in which they committed “to the choice of a consensus candidate around a common programme.

They are yet to disclose the choice of their single candidate.
