The Role of House of Chiefs and the process of upgrading chiefdoms in Cameroon.

The House of Chiefs, also known as the House of Traditional Chiefs, plays a crucial advisory and consultative role in the process of upgrading chieftaincies in the Northwest (NW) and Southwest (SW) regions of Cameroon. Here are the key functions and roles it performs in this context:

 

Advisory Role

Evaluation and Recommendation.The House of Chiefs evaluates requests for the upgrade of chiefdoms. They assess the merits of the applications based on established criteria such as population size, economic activity, cultural significance, and administrative efficiency.

 

Providing Expert Opinion

 

 Given their understanding of traditional customs and local dynamics, the House of Chiefs provides expert opinions on the suitability of a chiefdom for an upgrade. Their insights are crucial for making informed decisions.

 

 Consultative Role

Consultation with Authorities. The House of Chiefs consults with administrative authorities, such as the divisional and regional officers, to ensure that the process is thorough and transparent.

 

Engagement with the Community

They also engage with the local community to gauge support and consensus. This involves meetings, discussions, and gathering community feedback.

 

 

Supporting Documentation
